The Ultimate Professional Workstation Processors - Ryzen Threadripper PRO Series

21 Jan 2021

Starting from March 2021, AMD's range of Threadripper PRO desktop processors will be directly available to purchase by consumers alongside new WRX80 motherboards. Previously, the Threadripper PRO processors were exclusively sold with Lenovo workstation systems. There are many benefits to going with a Threadripper PRO CPU and WRX80 motherboard in a workstation system.

Starting with core count, the Threadripper PRO series matches the existing Threadripper 3000 processors with 12, 16, 32 and 64 core parts.

Memory configuration and capacity is one of the bigger advantages to the new platform and CPUs. The new Threadripper PRO processors paired with WRX80 motherboards support up to 8-channel memory in up to 2TB of capacity and support for UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM and 3DS RDIMM with ECC support as well. This is a huge advantage for users with memory intensive workloads. The non-PRO Threadripper processors with their sTRX40 motherboards support up to 256GB of quad-channel memory in the form of UDIMMs with ECC support.

This new platform also has support for up to 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes (doubled compared to regular Threadripper) for running multiple high-speed expansion cards and storage, as well as AMD PRO Techonologies.

AMD PRO technologies refers to AMD PRO security, AMD PRO manageability and AMD PRO business ready. These PRO grade processors feature multi-layer security features through AMD working with Microsoft and other PC manufacturers to implement enterprise-level security, as well as the processor's architecture itself and AMD memory guard to further improve security.

All AMD PRO series processors feature features such as support for Asset Inventory, KVM, Remote Management Firmware Updates and Microsoft Endpoint Manager.

ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI Motherboard

  • AMD sWRX8 socket for Threadripper PRO.
  • 8-Channel DDR4 memory with ECC support.
  • 7 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots for expansion.
  • Dual Intel 10G LAN ports onboard.

One of the new ASUS boards coming out that supports the Threadripper PRO series of processors is the ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI Motherboard. Not much detailed information is available about the board and how it performs, but from the specifications available at the moment it seems like this board will be able to handle any of the new processors and is packed full of features.

Some of the more notable features that customers interested in the Threadripper PRO CPUs may need are the dual 10G LAN ports for high speed connectivity and reliability and ASMB9-iKVM remote management for management and monitoring hardware configured with this board.

Gigabyte WRX80-SU8-IPMI Motherboard

  • AMD sWRX8 socket for Threadripper PRO.
  • 8-Channel DDR4 memory with ECC support.
  • 7 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots for expansion.
  • Dual Intel 10G LAN ports onboard.

The other board from a mainstream brand is Gigabyte's WRX80-SU8-IPMI motherboard.

The Gigabyte board matches most of the same features that the ASUS board - same memory, PCIe and 10G networking support with IPMI. Compared to the ASUS board, the Gigabyte board looks like it has a stripped down cooling solution without any fancy heatsink or shroud designs, which for server applications is usually a non-issue.

From what it looks like, the Threadripper PRO CPUs will not be compatible with older generation Threadripper compatible boards although the socket remains the same. This means that while you have to match the board with the CPU, current sTRX4 coolers should be compatible with the new chips and boards.
