Cyberpunk 2077 - A System Requirements Update!

25 Nov 2020

Cyberpunk 2077 is nearly here, and CD PROJEKT RED has just released an update for system requirements to run the game! Let's take a look at what CD PROJEKT RED have recommended for a few different resolutions and graphics settings, as well as our own recommendations for you to enjoy the Night City to it's fullest!

In this article we are going to look at configuring a system using current generation components, or what components you should be looking at upgrading to get the best Cyberpunk 2077 experience at different resolutions and graphics settings. As the guidelines shown in the system requirements table set by CD PROJEKT RED include some legacy hardware, we aim to provide our customers with guidelines incorporating the latest gear.

Processor (CPU) - AMD Ryzen and Intel Core

For those looking at just getting into PC gaming, or switching platforms from a console, we would recommend looking at the Ryzen 3 3100 or Ryzen 3 3300X. These are great value for money processors and are a fantastic option for an entry level system which will get you good framerates when exploring Night City at 1080p. Another option worth exploring is also the Intel Core i3-10100 if you are interested in an Intel based PC. Systems with this tier of processor are most likely suitable for 1080p gaming with high graphics settings when paired with a suitable graphics card.

In a mid-range PC, the Ryzen 5 3600 is our go to CPU for a gaming build. With 6 cores and 12 threads as well as solid IPC performance and being an outstanding value, it just makes sense for nearly any mid-range system. The Ryzen 5 5600X would be the next step up for an AMD system with it's Zen 3 architecture for incredibly fast performance in both games and productivity applications, otherwise the Ryzen 7 3700X is also a nice upgrade from the 3600 in the same generation. The Intel Core i5-10400F, 10600K and 10600KF are also solid options from Intel, but if you want a little more CPU grunt there is the Core i7-10700K and 10700KF which will make your gaming experience a little bit smoother. These processors will fit in well with a mid-range system and are perfect for maxed out graphics settings at 1080p with ray tracing, or even gaming at the very popular 1440p resolution.

At the higher end of the spectrum, the Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 5000 Series from 5600X to 5900X will be the performance processors to look out for from AMD. From the blue team the Core i7-10850K, Core i9-10900K and Core i9-10900KF will be your best bet to pair with a high-end GPU. If you are looking to max out your game details and run ray tracing at 1440p or even game at 4K then these CPUs will make sure that you don’t run into any CPU bottlenecks.

If maximum performance possible is what you are looking for, then the best of the best is the Ryzen 9 5950X from AMD or the Core i9-10900K / 10900KF from Intel. These processors are at the bleeding edge of processor performance, so a powerful graphics card is a definite must. These CPUs fit well into gaming rigs geared for super high resolution 4K max graphics gaming, as well any basically any other task you could possible want to run.

Graphics Card (GPU) - GeForce and Radeon

With how breath-taking detailed and beautiful the world of Cyberpunk 2077 is, you want to make sure that your GPU can keep up with pumping out all those frames for the smoothest gameplay possible.

Entry level systems are looking at the AMD Radeon 5600 XT, GTX 1660 Super or the RTX 2060. These graphics cards are good for gaming at 1080p with decent framerates, even with graphics settings set to high. Although the RTX 2060 does have ray tracing support, we think that gamers looking to enjoy the game with playable framerates will want to leave ray tracing off.

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and GeForce RTX 2060 Super, 2070 and 2070 Super are the main contenders for mid-range systems. They are outstanding cards for 1080p gaming with maximum graphics settings, and the 2070 Super will allow for great framerates even with ray tracing enabled. They are also suitable for 1440p gaming, but you may have to turn some of the detail settings to high for the best experience overall.

To push out high framerates for playing with a 1440p monitor at high settings, watch out for the RTX 3060 Ti, 3070 and RX 6800. All of these GPUs are capable of 1440p gaming in Night City, ray tracing gameplay included with RTX GPUs. All these cards perform well with a mid-high end processor to deliver you a fantastic, fluid and responsive gaming experience.

From 1440p Ultra quality settings with ray tracing to even 4K gameplay, the RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT are what you are after. These are the GPUs for high refresh rate 1440p as well, thanks to their pure graphics horsepower and large frame buffers. The RTX 3080 also has NVIDIA's DLSS technology for better 4K performance if you are running a 4K monitor.

Competing for the best gaming graphics card on the market are the RTX 3090 and RX 6900 XT. The 3090 is known to be a 4K gaming beast, and you can expect outstanding performance at that resolution with Ultra settings and ray tracing. The RX 6900 XT is yet to be released, but we think that performance will be at a comparable level to the 3090.

Storage and Memory

These components in a system build are usually less of a performance factor, but they are still worth considering when building a new system or upgrading an old one.

As seen on the system requirements table at the start of the article, CD PROJEKT RED indicates that there should be at least 70GB of available storage on your chosen storage device. When configuring a system, we suggest using at least a 480GB SSD these days. A 480GB SSD or larger will be able to hold your OS, as well as a couple of frequently played games and applications. If you would like a separate drive to install Cyberpunk 2077 on, we still recommend getting an SSD, as they are becoming more and more affordable as mass storage. Using an SSD ensures that you won't have any issues loading up the game, and general system responsiveness will be fantastic! In general, a solid option would be a 1TB SSD like the Kingston A2000, WD SN550 or Corsair MP400. To shop out range of 1TB SSDs click here! A 1TB drive is a good balance between cost, performance and storage space for most users. If you are building a compatible system, a Gen 4 SSD is also an option for some blazing fast storage!

Memory configurations are mostly standard on desktop systems, as most kits of memory are sold as multiples of 8. At this point in time, 8GB of memory usually isn't quite enough for most users, so a kit of 16GB in dual channel and running at around 3200MHz is what we would suggest as an entry level option. This means that when you have the game open, any background tasks won't reduce your framerate or cause unexpected hitches in your gameplay. For mid-range systems, 32GB kits of high speed DDR4 have come down a lot in price so that's what we would recommend. This means that 64GB kits for high-end systems are now also a great choice and are widely available, and most modern motherboards support up to 128GB so there is still some headroom to upgrade later on down the line if needed.
