AMD Ryzen 5000 Series - Zen 3 CPUs Are Coming!

For the past few years, AMD and their Ryzen portfolio of processors have been pushing processor technology and performance to the limit. The desktop market has never been more exciting, and AMD continues to improve the performance and efficiency of their Ryzen processors generation on generation. The all-new Zen 3 architecture, powering the next generation of AMD Ryzen processors is set to be no different, taking PC gaming and content creation performance to new levels while simultaneously improving on power efficiency.


Where Gaming Begins - AMD Ryzen™ 5000 Series Desktop Processors

Currently, AMD has 4 new processors in the works taking advantage of their new Zen 3 architecture. Here are some of the basic specifications for a quick overview :

As you can see, these 4 CPUs will be replacing 4 of the current generation Ryzen 3000 series processors, namely the Ryzen 9 3950X, Ryzen 9 3900X(T), Ryzen 7 3800X(T), and Ryzen 5 3600X(T). It appears that AMD has kept the same core and thread configuration for these new CPUs, and is more focused on architectural improvements and bumping up the frequency to improve performance.



Zen 3 Architectural Improvements

Just like existing Ryzen processors, AMD is utilizing the chiplet design built on the TSMC 7nm process for their Ryzen 5000 series processors. Things like PCIe 4.0 support and USB support will be kept the same, the differences in the architecture of the CPUs is coming from internal changes to the structure and layout of the chiplets.

With the architectural improvements that AMD has made with the new Zen 3 CPUs, efficiency and power consumption is also a major talking point. The new processors have the same TDP ratings as their current generation counterparts, which means that there are increases performance per watt, so overall system power consumption compared to running a Zen 2, Zen+ or Zen processor should be the same. AMD is claiming a 24% increase in performance per watt compared to Zen 2, purely through their updated architecture and design.

Because AMD has kept the same TDP rating for the new processors, this means that coolers which are currently suitable for a given Ryzen 3000 series CPU will probably perform equally as well on a new Ryzen 5000 CPU. As can be seen in the table above, the Ryzen 9 and Ryzen 7 parts will not be shipped with an included thermal solution, allowing customers to pick out their own high-performance aftermarket cooler to pair with their high-end processor. The Ryzen 5 5600X is the only one currently in the lineup that includes a thermal solution, which still makes sense given that it is a more value oriented part, and the included Wraith Stealth cooler does a good job of keeping a lower TDP processor fairly cool and quiet.


Motherboard and Chipset Support

With so many different motherboard options on the market for AMD socket AM4 processors, it can get quite confusing as to which board and chipset support what CPUs. Luckily no new chipsets are launching at the same time as these new processors, which simplifies the process somewhat.

The new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs are compatible with AMD B550 and X570 chipset based motherboards. AMD also plans to support B450 and X470 in the near future. Motherboard manufacturers will be rolling out motherboard updates for the new CPUs in the form of BIOS updates, so make sure that your B550 or X570 board has the latest BIOS installed. For users looking at keeping an existing B450 or X470 board to use with a Ryzen 5000 series CPU, make sure that the motherboard supports the processors that you want to install in it, as CPU compatibility may vary between motherboard and BIOS version. Make sure that you have a BIOS that is using AGESA version 1080 or newer for Ryzen 5000 series support. Just for some added clarification, the new Ryzen 5000 series processors will NOT be supported on B350 and X370 series motherboards.

The expected release date for these new CPUs as stated by AMD CEO Lisa Su is November 5, 2020.
